What Isn't

Everything was a piece of cake
Whatever he wanted Billy'd take
A little piece here a whole lot there
Till the night he woke to roadside flares
Lights out two dead on the spot
Those kids just flew thru that old rag top
Best friends never said goodbye
Billy's curse his will to survive

A twisted heart in a broken man
He was rock but now he’s sand
Stone blown to smithereens
A shattered soul that never dreams
He stares out from his prison at what isn't

Billy’s view of reality
Is a leap of faith from 10,000 feet
A freefall jump with no parachute
If he never lands it’ll be too soon
Straight Jack for the tales that he spins
On the regular crowd at the Holiday Inn
Pocket change for a taxi ride
A nickel bag on the nights he flies

A twisted heart in a broken man
He was rock but now he’s sand
Stone blown to smithereens
A shattered soul that never dreams

He stares out from his prison
At shadows in the distance
Tries to catch a glimpse – of what isn't

Can’t let go of what he never had
Cause he sees the future through his past
What isn’t here today won’t be gone tomorrow
Another 2nd chance slips through his hands
Another glimmer of what isn’t
