Long Goodbye

She takes down the last picture
Off the wall where it's hung for more than 35 years
Portraits of memories scenes from a lifetime
That slowly disappeared
He just sits by the window and stares at the streetlights
As if she isn't there
But there’s no one to blame when he can't remember
The hopes and dreams they once shared

So she fights the good fight
In a battle that just can't be won
He gave her a good life
Till the evening of his setting sun
Oh she swears to be by his side
As long as it takes for this long goodbye

She’s not sure when it started
The first time she noticed that snowy Christmas Day
He seemed lost and confused by the two little girls
Asking grandpa to play
It’s a cold lonely journey at times she grows weary
Cries Lord I don't understand
But her faith’s in the promise of what lies beyond us
And the day they’ll dance again

CHORUS

Oh she swears to be by his side
As long as it takes for this long goodbye
